Ans. mlnission dismissed the petition on the ground that the complainant has not been authorised to represent the passengers of the flight. The complaint was based on the newspaper which m~ght or might not be correct. The commission argued that the Act of 1986 was enacted to give redressal to the consumers if there was any defect in the goods purchased or there was any deficiency in the service hired or brech of the promise to be made. It is necessary to note that social action litigation was initially used in the late 1970s, and even report published in the newspapers were treated suo motto as writ petition by the judges of Supreme Court and h~gh courts. For example, in Rain Pyari vs. Union of India AIR 1988 Ra-jasthan 124, on 10th September, 1985, a local newspaper of Rajasthan reported that an 80 years old widow of a soldier ran from pillar to post for forty years to get the pension of her husband. in vain. It was only after the direction of the court to the government of Rajastkan that the woman was paid her husband´s pension.
Population increase has created more pressure on the production. As a result the whole system has been affected with the overflow of money and consumerism .Whether it is a need or a greed these production scatter life are continuing the demands of the society .It has been become essential to put a check on the movement of all the commodities to check consumerism and make consumer protection laws. The role of Government and Non-Government organizations (NGO’s) to execute these laws is mandatory. Against this backdrop the present paper is an attempt to examine the role of NGO‟s in protecting and executing consumer laws.
